Cold & Flu Season Is Here!
As we move further into cold and flu season, it is important to remember that germs can spread quickly in the school setting. Even if your student has made it through one round of cold symptoms, another illness may be just around the corner.
Flu vaccines are available through primary care providers and most local pharmacies. If you or your student have not yet received this year's flu vaccine, consider making an appointment. Vaccination is an important step in helping protect against influenza and reducing the risk of severe illness. Don't wait until flu season is in full swing to take preventive measures!
Is It a Cold or the Flu?
Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether your student is experiencing symptoms of a common cold or the flu. The chart below highlights some of the more commonly observed symptoms in the school setting and may help you determine whether your student is well enough to attend school or should remain home to recover.
Please remember that this chart is intended as a general guide and is not a diagnostic tool. Symptoms can vary from person to person, and not all possible symptoms are listed.
A reminder to families: Students who are ill, have a fever, or are not well enough to participate comfortably in the school day should remain home. Please follow school illness and return-to-school guidelines before sending your student back to class.
Keeping sick students home when appropriate helps protect the health and well-being of our entire school community.
Medication Policy Reminder
As a reminder, all schools within CSD13J follow applicable Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and Oregon Health Authority (OHA) guidelines regarding medication administration and storage. We maintain a strict medication policy to help ensure the health and safety of all students.
Students are not permitted to carry or self-administer medications at school or during school-sponsored activities, including athletic events, without the appropriate prior written authorization and documentation on file with the school.
This policy applies to all over-the-counter products and prescription medications and includes any oral, topical, or inhaled item that has an “Active Ingredient” listed on it’s label. It also includes emergency medications, such as asthma inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens).
Please understand that this policy is not intended to prevent students from receiving necessary medications. Rather, it is in place to ensure medications are used safely, appropriately, and in accordance with established school procedures.
